ReconciliACTION at SWC

On Friday, November 8th, SWC staff participated in the CBE’s Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Children First) Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day.  As a part of our school’s Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, Department Teams spent time discussing how to create spaces in our school to honour Indigenous culture, language and ways of knowing.  Friday, November 29th was our ReconciliACTION Day to put these plans into place.  There are now several areas of the school that highlight Indigenous leaders, language and stories.  Students are encouraged to check out these displays!

Our buffalo facing the storm was created by grade 12 students, Nicole A, Yuna L and Sarah P, to represent the Blackfoot concept of determination: Iikakimat (ee-gah-gi-mah).  Students then read about “trying hard”, and responded in their own words about facing their own storms. We will rotate student work on a regular basis.

The main foyer display case is a celebration of Indigenous culture and creativity, showcasing a growing collection of artwork from Indigenous artists, and items supporting Indigenous businesses. This initiative reflects our commitment to honoring and uplifting Indigenous heritage within our community. Over time, the collection will continue to expand, offering a dynamic and inspiring display for all who enter the school.

In addition to highlighting professional Indigenous artwork throughout the year, the display case also features exceptional work created by our talented art students. This dual focus ensures the display case remains a constant source of beauty and inspiration, creating a welcoming and culturally rich atmosphere in our school.

IB students worked together to create a Land Acknowledgement video with CBE's newly rewritten commitment. They also added their own personal statements. This was done as a CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) project.

The Learning Centre is now filled with Indigenous messages and images encouraging students to persevere in the face of challenges and welcoming them to the space.
