We take safety and security seriously. It is important that we maintain a safe and caring community so that learning can take place.

Visitors & Volunteers

Our school is a closed campus. All visitors and volunteers must report directly to the main office to sign-in. Students should not invite friends to visit the school. Individuals found on school property who do not have legitimate business with the school and who have not registered in the main office may be charged with trespassing while on school property.

All Calgary Board of Education (CBE) schools operate as closed campuses, and individuals found on school property without legitimate business and without signing in at the main office may be charged with trespassing under the School Act of Alberta and receive a ticket from Calgary Police Services. This includes the school parking lot and adjacent fields as well.

This means that students from other schools, even siblings of current students, are not permitted to visit schools they do not attend. This also includes former graduates or non-student visitors without valid business to conduct on-site. If any of the above wishes to visit a school, they must check in with the administration at that school to request permission. Once they have received permission, they must check in at the main office and sign in as a visitor immediately upon arrival. This helps ensure the safe, welcoming, caring, and supportive learning environment that students, staff, and visitors can expect at each Calgary Board of Education site.

Accidents

The details of any accident are to be reported immediately, either to a teacher or to the Main Office for appropriate documentation and/or communication.

School Photos and Visual ID Cards

Plan to have your picture taken!

Student photo visual ID cards will be initially issued at no cost to all students. Lost or damaged ID cards will need to be immediately replaced at a charge to the students.

For safety and security reasons students are required to have their current visual ID card with them while in the building.

They will be required for admittance to classes, school activities, exams, sporting events, access to printing devices, checking out library books, subject textbooks, and picking up yearbooks. ID cards may also be required to verify student status on Calgary Transit.

All SWC students must have their picture taken, even if a photo package is not purchased. You do not need to bring money for photos during school start up. Each student will have pictures taken and receive a proof package mid-September. Please visit their website for further information at http://lifetouch.ca/

School Resource Officer

The role of the Resource Officer is to provide guidance and act as a legal resource for teachers, students, parents / guardians and the community at large. Part of this role is to encourage communication and greater understanding among young people and the Calgary Police Service.

Security Cameras

Security cameras are situated throughout the school building and grounds. Cameras are monitored by administration. (CBE Administrative Regulation 1066 Video Surveillance).

Sign-Out Procedures

Students, who are required to leave for medical or dental appointments or for any other legitimate purpose, must first sign out at the office. Students who become ill should report to the office as soon as possible; they must not remain unattended. These absences still need to be confirmed / authorized by a parent or guardian. For more information see Attendance.

Student Identification Cards (ID)

The safety and security of our students and staff is of paramount importance to us. Part of our protocol is that we require all students and staff to carry visual identification while in the building. With such a large population, this practice assists us in more readily detecting people who do not belong here and may pose a threat

Student photo ID cards will be initially issued at no cost to all students at registration. Visual ID will be required for: admittance to classes, school activities, exams, sporting events, checking out library books and subject textbooks, purchasing grad tickets, securing grad gowns, and picking up yearbooks and refund cheques. They may also be required to verify student status on Calgary Transit. Students without their visual ID may be sent home (at the discretion of the administration). Lost ID cards will need to be immediately replaced at a charge to the students.

Loaner temporary identification tags are available on an occasional basis. Students who repeatedly leave their identification at home will be sent home to get them or offered the opportunity to purchase a new one. (CBE Policy 6031)

Student Searches

In the event that school safety and security is a concern administration has the right to complete searches of student lockers, student property or personal belongings at any time.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Protection of Privacy Act section 4. The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
